Today our Coquitlam orthodontist shares ‘Smile’ a graphic novel for kids aged 8-12. This delightful book by Raina Telgemeier depicts the emotional ups and downs of dealing with braces, and so much more.

In the delightful graphic novel ‘Smile’ by Raina Telgemeier, main character Raina just wants to be a 'normal' 6th grader. Then, one night Raina has a fall and severely damages her two front teeth. This fateful event results in a long and frustrating ordeal involving surgery, braces, cringe-worthy headgear… and even a retainer with false teeth attached.

Not only that! Raina still has to has to deal with all the normal day-to-day confusion about boys and the social issues that come with being a in grade six.

Coping with braces and orthodontic treatment can be difficult, especially for kids and teens, when all they really want is to fit in with their friends. This delightful book deals with young Raina's orthodontic issues, as well as a major earthquake, boy confusion, and friends who turn out to be not so friendly.
