Are you too self-conscious about how your smile looks with braces, to smile openly in pictures? Today our Coquitlam orthodontists share some tips on how you can feel more confident smiling in pictures, while you have braces.
Just Go Ahead and Smile!
A genuinely happy smile has the power to turn an average picture in to a fabulous picture! If you keep your teeth and braces clean, you have nothing to hide, so just show the world that smile. There's no need to hold back. Just remind yourself that a bright smile makes everyone look better in pictures, including you!
For those shy folks who are new to braces, it can be a good idea to practice your smile, so that you feel more confident. OK so you're going to feel a little silly at first, but just go ahead and smile at yourself in the mirror...not a fake smile...a real and genuine smile. Before long you'll be feeling more confident about how you look when smiling with braces.
Good Oral Hygiene
Making sure that your braces and teeth clean and free from particles of food is the absolute easiest way to look great in pictures with braces. The individual components of your braces can attract and trap food and plaque so, to help your smile look it's best in pictures be sure to brush and floss your teeth twice a day.
It can also be helpful to clean your teeth after each meal. Using your interdental brush to clean your braces as well as the tight spaces between your archwire and your teeth will help to brush away trapped food particles.
Flossing with braces is easy too, and will help to keep your smile picture perfect. To floss with braces, simply feed the floss through the space between the main arch wire and the portion of the tooth closest to the gum. Gently 'saw' the floss up and down along both sides of the tooth and be sure not to use too much force, particularly around your archwires.
Make-Up Tricks for Braces
If you want to play down your braces try wearing a neutral shade of lip colour and applying more dramatic eye makeup. Strong brows are fashionable and can help to focus attention on your eyes and away from your mouth.
If you enjoy wearing more colourful makeup, try putting on some red lipstick to highlight your braces and make an accessory out of your orthodontic treatment. Lipstick colours in darker shades will help to make your teeth look whiter. Find a shade that will compliment your skin tone and the colour of your elastics.
Lower-Profile Orthodontic Treatment Options
If you're still not feeling confident about how your smile will look with braces, you may want to consider a lower profile orthodontic treatment option. Here are some different options available from Coquitlam Family Orthodontics:
- Ceramic Braces - ‘Translucent’ ceramic braces are lower-profile than traditional metal braces because the brackets are made of a tooth-coloured ceramic material that blends in with your teeth. These braces are barely noticeable when you talk or smile.
- In-Ovation - With no ties or elastics to trap food and plaque, In-Ovation Self-Ligating braces are smaller than traditional braces. These braces might help you to feel more confident when smiling for pictures.
- Invisalign - Hardly anyone will notice that you're straightening your smile with Invisalign orthodontic treatment. Invisalign's clear aligners are almost completely invisible when worn. Not only are the aligners clear, they are also removable! That means, for those extra important shots you can simply remove your aligners, then put them back in once the picture has been taken.
- Lingual Braces - Lingual braces are similar to traditional metal braces except that they are attached to the backs of your teeth, making them harder to spot. With lingual braces you will be able to smile freely for the camera, confident that your braces won't be showing in the picture.
