Is teeth whitening a good idea after braces?

You might consider having your teeth whitened after your orthodontic treatment is complete, and your braces come off. Here, our Coquitlam orthodontists explain why.

Once their braces come off, after months or years of treatment, many of our patients discover that the spots on their teeth where their brackets were adhered are lighter in colour than the rest of each tooth.

This is not unusual. It happens because, over time, food and drink can cause teeth to become discoloured.

While you've had braces, the small area covered by the brackets has been protected and sealed off from exposure to all of the food and drink that you’ve consumed, but the other parts of your teeth haven't had that protection.

That's why you might find that your teeth look splotchy and uneven after your orthodontic treatment is complete. This doesn't mean that the exposed areas have become unusually yellow, they just appear to be so in contrast with the areas that have been protected.

Over time, this uneven appearance will diminish, but some patients prefer not to wait. That's why teeth whitening is common following orthodontic treatment.

Teeth whitening helps to give you a brighter smile by removing stains on the surface of the teeth, and lightening the actual colour of your the teeth.
