Throughout your orthodontic treatment, you'll visit your orthodontist regularly for checkups and adjustments. But it's important to remember to keep visiting your dentist, too!
Throughout your orthodontic treatment you’ll be in your orthodontist’s office fairly frequently. This is going to be the case whether you have braces or Invisalign. Your orthodontist needs to check on your progress regularly to make sure that your treatment is on track.
However, it's also important to make time to visit your dentist for regular cleanings and checkups throughout your orthodontic treatment. In fact, you may find that even more visits that usual are beneficial.
Your orthodontist’s job is to straighten your teeth and give you a healthy and stable bite but they can’t do that if your oral health is compromised due to gum disease or cavities.
Wearing braces, or Invisalign, can create crevices on your teeth where food particles, plaque and debris can get stuck. Unfortunately, for this reason, even those people who are extremely diligent about brushing and flossing have an increased chance of developing cavities and gum disease during orthodontic treatment. That's why seeing a dentist regularly throughout your treatment is so important.
Your dentist will remove plaque or tartar buildup to prevent problems from occurring in the first place. If they spot a problem developing, your dentist will be able to catch it early and keeping it from getting worse, which helps to keep your orthodontic treatment on track.
Just ask your dentist if they think extra visits during your orthodontic treatment would be beneficial to you.
