If you want a lower profile look to your orthodontic treatment but don’t feel comfortable trusting yourself with removable aligners (Invisalign), lingual ‘behind-the-teeth’ braces may be right for you.
The most significant advantage to lingual braces is twofold: they aren’t visible, and they’re also not removable like Invisalign aligners are. This may seem like an unlikely benefit, given that the fact that Invisalign aligners are removable are one of their advantages. Being able to remove your orthodontic appliances to eat and clean your teeth is clearly a bonus, after all!
But when it comes down to it, what constitutes an 'advantage' varies from person to person.
Removable aligners are great for people who are completely committed to their treatment and will keep their aligners in despite pain, tightness or discomfort.
But if you think you're likely to give in and remove your aligners when things get uncomfortable, or if you think you may simply be a bit too absent-minded to be as consistent with treatment as you should be, lingual braces may be a better choice.
Be honest with yourself about this. It’s not a failing if you think you won't be able to resist taking your aligners out, and you'll be better off in the long run if you choose a treatment option that truly suits your needs. Many of our patients aren’t sure they can trust themselves to be consistent with removable aligners. Lingual braces are a great choice for these people, because they are still essentially invisible, but are not removable.
