If your teeth are misaligned, you may sometimes feel a lack of confidence in your smile. Orthodontics can help!
Often, people don’t realize that something has been troubling them until it’s over. For many of our patients here at Coquitlam Family Orthodontics, this is true when it comes to having misaligned teeth.
Misaligned teeth can affect your health in a variety of ways. And the very same factors that have a negative impact on your health can also make certain social situations stressful or intimidating.
Malocclusions (misaligned teeth) can be an aesthetic problem, of course, but they can also make breathing, eating, and even talking difficult. These health factors also have an impact on social situations, making them uncomfortable for patients with misaligned teeth.
Most people, and adults in particular, tend to become accustomed to dealing with these social problems, and have accepted them as an inevitable part of life. They tend to come up with subconscious 'bandaid' solutions for dealing with these issues.
After their orthodontic treatment is finished - and indeed, before that in some cases - a lot of our patients start noticing how much their feelings of self-consciousness about their misaligned teeth and the related problems had actually been holding them back.
Many of them comment on how much more confidently they feel taking part in the social aspects of day to day life, like laughing, having their pictures taken, eating or talking, than they did before they had their teeth straightened.
Patients who hadn't ever felt comfortable eating around others now do so without thinking twice. Those who avoided smiling or laughing in photos now do so with pleasure.
Some have even felt and increase in confidence when they speak and offer up their opinions at work, since they’re no longer concerned about what others will think of their teeth.
